Featured Food Blogger – Keely from GormandizeWhat is the name of your blog – and what led you to choose that name?

¿What is the name of your blog – and what led you to choose that name?

My blog name is actually in the process of changing! It was originally called Gormandize with A-dizzle and K-bobo, because I started it with a friend (who was A-dizzle) and we’re a bit dorky so we picked a pretty dorky name! But quite a while back A-dizzle decided to move on to other things so I’ve been thinking of changing the name since then. I’Ve recently decided it’s time for my blog to “grow up” so I’m shortening the name to just Gormandize – it’s much less of a mouthful which is convenient when people ask me what my blog is called.

Tell us about your blog, ¿how did it come to be? ¿Did you have any goals when you started it and have you achieved them?

My blog is a vegan recipe blog with a world food focus. I really just started it because I thought it would be cool to have my recipes on the net (it’s also handy for myself to look back at things I’ve made in the past to see how I did them). I am passionate about sharing vegan food around, because I think that we should all think about where our food comes from and increase the amount of healthy vegetable based meals in our diet. It still surprises me sometimes that there are so many people who genuinely think that vegan food must be awful and taste terrible! So I guess I’m on an awareness campaign to get more people out there eating vegan food (and not just vegans!).

I don’t think I really thought a lot when I started my blog. I guess I didn’t really know what I was getting in to, so it just kind of grew and developed bit by bit, not according to some greater vision. I’M pretty sure my goal when I started my blog was to have 50 followers. I’Ve got a lot more than that now, so if you aim low then you definitely won’t be disappointed.

Where do you get inspiration for your blog?

I’M absolutely nuts about travelling and it’s where most of my money goes. I just love learning about new countries and experiencing completely new things – and a big part of that is food. So a lot of my inspiration comes from my travels and from Art Calendars researching dishes from countries all over the world. That’s why my blog has a World Food Challenge, which gives readers the opportunity to request a country which they don’t know much about the cuisine of, and I’ll research it and cook lots of recipes from that country. It’s so much fun and I love learning so many new dishes.

If you had to pick one favourite post what is it and why? Which post do you think deserved more attention than it received?

I’Ve had so many recipes on the blog that I don’t know if I could pick just one favourite! Probably one of the favourite things I’ve ever cooked for the blog is my Vegan Smörgåstårta (Sandwich Cake) because I had so much fun making it, even though my photography skills weren’t very good back then!

A post that I would have liked to get more attention would be my Almond and Orange Blossom Friendship Cupcakes. The cupcakes were delicious, I was happy with the photos and I wrote about a topic that was very personal to me. I really would have loved to have more people’s opinions on that topic!

¿Is there a kitchen gadget or appliance you just can’t live without?

I love kitchen gadgets but I’m living on a pretty tight budget so I can’t really afford many – so most of the time I have to make do with what I can get. However, every time I use my awesome coconut grater I am soooo grateful that I have it! Otherwise I just wouldn’t be able to use fresh coconut as much as I do. I also love that it looks a bit like a bizarre torture implement, so it’s fun when people accidentally find it in my kitchen drawer.

¿Do you have a favourite cookbook?

I don’t actually use cookbooks much, as I tend to make up most of my recipes with whatever I have lying around or whatever I can pick up cheap at the supermarket. I’Ve got a few cookbooks that I always turn to for inspiration though and one of the absolute best is Appetite for Reduction by the incredible Isa Chandra Moskowitz. It’s got the most inventive and delicious recipes and I love that they’re healthy too so I don’t have to feel too bad eating them.

Being a food blogger you of course love food, ¿so what is your favourite weekday meal and what is your favourite dish to make for a special occasion?

My favourite weekday meal is whatever-is-in-the-fridge minestrone soup! I love soups and especially soups loaded up with lots of beans and vegetables and grains and pasta and herbs. Sometimes I just look in my fridge and find 5 different veggies and make them soup – easy and comforting and delicious!
