The gift of staff retention

ThanksAn increasing number of bosses are lavishing gifts upon their employees in a bid to keep staff happy in the job, news.com.au reports.

After researching the trend, recruitment firm Talent2 says the majority of organisations currently have a rewards or incentive scheme in place or are considering one.

IPods, toasters, holidays, footy tickets and housekeepers are just a few examples of the types of gifts employees are receiving, the firm's study found.

Winning at the name game

BrainstormA good company name balances message with aesthetics, according to a BusinessWeek article of business name strategy.

US branding expert Mike Carr says the golden rule of naming is memorability; he claims if a name can get inside a consumer's head, a lot of other naming sins will be forgiven.

Start the process by conducting a brain storming session with a small group of company insiders; try scouring dictionaries, magazines and encyclopedias to get the ideas flowing.

Other tips include focusing on simple nouns and adjectives, being as catchy as possible and aiming for originality as opposed to mimicking the names of high profile companies.

SwampedThere are very few professionals who wouldn't like to move their projects along faster. With this in mind, the lifehack blog has developed a handy list of tips and tricks to increase productivity.

Get up earlier - give yourself extra time each morning to be productive before others start demanding your attention

The write stuff – keep a notebook or PDA handy so you can write ideas down; remember to review these ideas regularly

'Eat the Frog' - don't ignore the worst job of the day, always do it first or 'eat the frog' as the saying goes; the day can only get better

Create a 'you zone' - when you need to time to concentrate, put on headphones (people will be less likely to interrupt).
