Whether peanut butter spoils once you open the jar is a common question. How long peanut butter lasts , how to detect if it's gone bad, and where to keep it safely are all covered here.
Because of its pleasant flavor and silky texture, peanut butter is a go-to condiment. It's a fantastic resource for nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and good fats.
When compared to other condiments, peanut butter has a rather long shelf life. This is due to the fact that peanut butter has a high-fat content and a low moisture content, both of which make it difficult for germs to develop. The shelf life of peanut butter can also be affected by a number of other factors. To begin with, the quality of its construction significantly affects how long it will last.
Commercial peanut butter typically contains preservatives like sodium benzoate and stabilizers such as hydrogenated vegetable oils or palm oils to extend its shelf life. A better texture and look can be achieved by using a stabilizer to prevent the oil from separating.
Sodium benzoate is a common preservative that inhibits microbial development. Commercial peanut butter, thanks to the stabilizers and preservatives added to it, can be kept for up to two years if it hasn't been opened, and for just a few months after that. When stored in the fridge, its shelf life is extended.
However, the Natural Peanut Butter Label requires that the product contain 90% peanuts by weight. They don't have the same shelf life since they lack stabilizers and preservatives. But the oil in certain natural peanut butter may be stabilized.
Opened peanut butter without stabilizers may typically be stored for up to a month in the cupboard.
