Converting Your Database from Macintosh to PC
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are switching from FileMaker Pro Macintosh to FileMaker Pro PC (Windows) and need to transfer your databases, the news is good: the databases are platform independent (with a few exceptions, described at the end of this document) and the transition can be made with a few simple steps; evaluate and perform each step below if it applies to your situation:
1- Naming the databases
. If your PC is running a version of Windows prior to Windows 95, you will need to rename the file to a name that is no longer than 8 characters (plus the three-digit extension described in the paragraph below.) These 8 characters must be letters or numbers.
. If you are converting from MacOS to Windows, add the DOS file extension to the name of each file. You should add the extension that matches the version of FileMaker Pro on your Macintosh:
FileMaker Pro 5: "FP5"
FileMaker Pro 3.0/4.x: ".FP3"
FileMaker Pro 2.0: ".FM"
Generally, adding the ".FP3" or ".FP5" extension to the file names will not break relationships, scripts, etc. that depend on the file name. However, renaming your files by adding the ".FM" extension will probably break lookups and anything else that depend on file names. These will need to be redefined to function after adding the extension to the file names.
2- Converting older versions of filemaker pro
If your Macintosh databases are from FileMaker Pro 2.0 or later, there are no file conversion issues. Proceed to step 3. If your Macintosh databases are from older versions of FileMaker (FileMaker Pro 1.0, FileMaker II, FileMaker 4, FileMaker Plus), you will need to convert these files to FileMaker Pro 2.x before they can be opened on the PC. Download the FileMaker Pro 2.1 Mac Trial software, available at:
ftp://ftp.filemaker.com/pub/USA-Macintosh/Trial_Software/FileMakerPro2.1Trial.hqx
Open each of your databases in the 2.1 trial software. This will create a new file for each of your databases, converted to the 2.1 file format. Name each of the converted files with the ".FM" extension. These files can be opened by the PC versions of FileMaker Pro.
3- Transfering the databases
. The easiest way to transfer databases is via a network. Depending on your network setup, you may transfer the files directly to the PC, or to a file server, then to the PC. If you do not have a network, you may transfer files by disk.
. If your Macintosh is running System 7.5 or greater and your file fits on a floppy disk or removable media such as a Zip or Jaz disk, insert a PC-formatted disk into the drive of the Macintosh or Mac clone, drag your file(s) onto it, then take the disk to your PC and drag the file(s) to the desired location on the PC.
. If your Macintosh is running an operating system older than 7.5, you will need to use Apple File Exchange to physically transfer your files; for instructions, see the literature that came with your computer or read the TechInfo article "Using Apple File Exchange".
